Dr. Piotr Letki (born 1981) – is a historian and an MA graduate of Opole University’s Institute of History, where, in 2005, he wrote a thesis on the subject “Legiony rzymskie okresu Cesarstwa w swietle >> Zarysy wojskowosci << Flawiusza Wegecjusza Renatusa” (“The Roman legions of the imperial era in the light of Flavius Vegetius Renatus’ De Re Militari “).
In 2010 he completed his PhD, which he also earned from Opole University. His thesis was entitled “Uzbrojenie I taktyka walki jazdy rzymskiej w czasach panowania cesarza Dioklecjana 284-305 NE” (“Armament and combat tactics of the Roman cavalry during the reign of Emperor Diocletian 284-305 AD”). He wrote this under the supervision of Professor Joanna Rostropowicz.
Dr. Piotr Letki is interested in the history of Ancient Rome, especially as it relates to military matters. The Roman Cavalry of the third and fourth centuries AD (organization, armament and tactics) are a special fascination. He has published in a variety of Polish academic journals and history magazines.
This English edition of his PhD thesis contains a detailed analysis of Diocletian-era cavalry with a thorough examination of their equipment, tactics and organization. The book is illustrated throughout with black and white line drawings which will be interesting to those aiming to recreate these warriors.
