1882 Wood Engraving Lincoln Cathedral England Spire St Mary’s Church XGS6

This is an original 1882 black and white wood engraving of the Lincoln Cathedral in Lincoln, England. The cathedral is said to have been the tallest structure in the world for 249 years between the year of 1300 to 1549. The cathedral originally had three spires, but in 1549, the central spire collapsed, and was never rebuilt. In 1255, the body of a missing eight-year old boy was found in the well at Lincoln; the Jews were accused of his abduction, and several were arrested and hanged. The young boy became known as Little Saint Hugh. The cathedral benefitted from this event, as hundreds of people saw Little Hugh as a martyr, so pilgrimages were made to venerate him at the structure. Chaucer wrote of the incident in “The Prioress’s Tale,” and a ballad was also written about the boy in the late 18th century.
