Twisted, biomorphic forms are a recurring source of inspiration for Michèle Oberdieck—moments of growth and decay that capture how living things are shaped by the forces of nature. Sculptural pieces such as this archival bowl begin as sketches, which are modeled in clay before being translated into glass. Oberdieck has developed her own reinterpretation of the classic Swedish Graal technique: using diamond engraving wheels, she cuts patterns through an overlay of colored glass shaped into an egg. These engraved blanks are then heated overnight, reblown, melted and blown again into their final sculptural form.
