Visiting my home state of Minnesota, I wanted to visit our state’s iconic Split Rock Lighthouse, the Guardian of the North Shore on Lake Superior. Getting to the State Park just as the sun began to set, we made the short hike to a rocky beach where we could see the lighthouse where it stood tall on its cliff, glowing in the day’s last light. The air smelled of pine and fresh lake mist, and the steady rhythm of waves below felt like nature’s heartbeat. Meanwhile, a loon called somewhere in the distance, its song echoing across the vastness of Lake Superior.

Sunset photography is never easy. The light shifts constantly, and every second counts. I adjusted my settings, knowing the magic wouldn’t last long. Shadows stretched across the rock face, making the Split Rock Lighthouse even more dramatic.
