This cup is a unique piece, totally handmade using natural red clay from Měngsòng 勐宋, Menghai county in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. It harbors several famous wild tea forests for the production of pu’er tea, like Naka and Huazhuliangzi, the latter being the highest peak in Xishuangbanna. The clay is mixed with sand from Mekong river to improve the molding performance and add porosity.
After being shaped, the cup was baked twice in the kiln at a temperature of 1280-1300°C, giving it a smooth surface, and glazed with ashes from local forest grass and elephant faeces, which gives a unique white color. The glaze was poured naturally on the dark purple clay, resembling soft winter snow melting with the first warm rays of spring, only to show the precious mountain soil beneath it.
